Dear Winter

Dear Frozen Fairbanks,

I have enjoyed the whistling endless nights.

The bone-chilled gust of air to wake me up in the morning when I open the front door to head to work.

I will never forget the dancing Aurora Borealis. Vibrant strokes of green and yellow,  it was like a magical paintbrush swept across the Northern sky painting a picture just for me.

I have come to appreciate the routine of wrapping up my in ten layers of leggings, woolly socks, scarves, pants, down- coat, hats, and boots.

While the sidewalk might be slippery, and every day I slip and slide, it has forced me to learn the “Alaska Shuffle.” Shuffling my way with ease across the most treacherous spots to work each morning allows me to wear my shoe of choice, like Chelseas or Danskos. Thank you, Alaska Shuffle.

I will always hate the inevitable fifteen minute wait for the car to heat up so I can safely drive home. It is cold, and I do not love NPR enough to make up for that shivering -30 degree wait in the front seat.

Our home is so cozy, thanks to you frozen Fairbanks. Knowing that I can come home to my little 900 square ft duplex, with heat, food, and Jason makes my house a “home.”

The trees and ground have been white for months. This is beautiful.

I still love snow- you haven’t taken that from me, in fact, I may love it even more than I did before I knew you! From cross country skiing to sledding, winter has so much fun to offer!

Frozen Fairbanks- I know you are melting now, and I can finally see the pavement on the roads, but I want you to know that I have enjoyed our time together. The -40s and the +20s. I didn’t think we would hit it off this well, but we have and I’m so happy about it! In fact, I have been bragging about you to all my friends, insisting they meet you! I keep telling them Frozen Fairbanks is…

“Not as cold as everyone says . . . and is super dry, completely unique.”

So melt away you must, but remember, next year, you have one friend who is here- ready with a smile.

much love,

  1. Thank you for a wonderful posting that made me long for my old home. There is not a day goes by when I do not lament the fact that age and health forced me from my remote abode. Savor your time there and if your lucky you will be like myself full with memories….. to last a lifetime.

    1. I actually came from North Carolina, where it is warm and sunny most of the time- but I LOVE these winters up here. Never thought I would say that- but I do. I guess you have to experience it to really know. AND it’s all in perspective 🙂

  2. This is beautiful! I’m more of a summer person, but your post definitely made me appreciate these Canadian winters a little bit more 🙂
